McClain helps Hurricanes rock Mustangs

Posted Saturday, August 27, 2011 by Sidney McClain

PIEDMONT — Caleb McClain passed for 252 yards and three touchdowns, and Levi Bufford scored three touchdowns to power Wren to a dominating 42-0 win against Palmetto on Friday night.

The Mustangs’ wing-T offense never found its rhythm while Wren’s fast-tempo shotgun attack broke in backups early in the second half.

The decision was never in doubt.

Wren (1-0) held Palmetto (1-1) to 188 yards total offense in avenging a loss to the Mustangs in last year’s opener, when the Hurricanes were without several suspended starters.

This year, Class AAAA Wren handled the defending Skyline AA Region champions in convincing fashion.

“It’s a good way to get the season started,” said Wren coach Jeff Tate. “Our kids played hard, played tough and played clean. That’s all you can ask for. The guys performed well up front on both sides of the line.”

Wren’s Anthony Berendsen recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass, all in the third quarter. Justin McNeil also intercepted a pass for the Hurricanes. Wren’s Jake Burton recorded two tackles for loss in the first half.

Bufford gained 85 yards and scored two touchdowns on five rushing attempts. McClain connected with him for a 21-yard scoring pass just after halftime, and they followed that with a two-point conversion.

Palmetto’s Josh Mullinax intercepted McClain near the end zone just before halftime.

McClain completed 13 of 22 passes on the night, and he connected with Derek Bayne for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter
